Celebrating Onesie Wednesday

Did you know it was World Autism Day on Wednesday 2 April? Students and staff at RNIB College Loughborough came in unusual attire in support of "Onesie Wednesday", a National Autistic Society initiative which coincided with World Autism Day.

Autism is a lifelong development disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people and the world around them. People are often described as on the autistic spectrum, which reflects the fact that while all people with autism share certain areas of difficulty, their condition will affect them in different ways. Asperger's Syndrome is a form of autism.

More than 1 in 100 people living in the UK are on the autistic spectrum.

The College has a number of students with autism so was keen to support the event. Last year the College signed the Inclusion Charter to show its commitment to supporting students with autism and is now in the process of completing autism accreditation to formally recognise this specialism.

Jemma Bird, a College student said "the College really meets my needs. I'm making great progress through the College's enterprise curriculum"

Tony Warren, College Principal was very pleased to be supporting the event and wore his tracksuit for the day. "I'm delighted at how we have developed our provision for people with autism. We have had some tremendous successes."
