Two students from RNIB College Loughborough's independence programme known as the Bridge programme have recently settled into their own privately rented property. It involved a lot of work, some negotiation and good will from all partners involved to reach this great outcome. Tina Bills, the College's Bridge Co-ordinator worked closely with local Social Services staff within their new Pathway to Housing Project as well as the support staff from Affinity Trust. They worked together to coordinate Personal Assistant support, agree funding, as well as develop a suitable transition plan. The final part to the jigsaw was for Sam and Christy to plan their new independent life, so they decided to use some of their personal budget to book onto the College's day time activities programme, Flexible Futures, based within the Colleges enterprises.

During their time on the Bridge programme Sam and Christy worked to develop the skills needed to move into their own home. They learnt how to shop and budget, cook and clean and plan their spare time.

June Murray, Acting Principal said 'this is a great outcome for Sam and Christy and for all partners involved; our key focus on all our programmes at the College is around building student independence, so this is an outstanding success for them both.'”

Last month College students made a New Home card to celebrate Sam and Christy successes. Partners involved in the project, Tina Bills, Caroline Blankley from Leicestershire County Council and Rita Sharpe from Affinity Trust met with Sam and Christy, enjoying tea and cake, along with a tour of their new home.
