Norma Curtis, Quality Improvement Manager at RNIB College Loughborough, has received the 'Highly Commended' award as Senior Manager of the Year from the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) at the Leading the Learner Voice Awards held in London on 6 July.

RNIB College on Radmoor Road recruits people aged 16 plus with sight loss, learning disabilities, autism and other disabilities on a day or residential basis. It was one of only two similar colleges in the UK to be presented with an award at the ceremony.

In 2008 a student conference was held in which they said what they most enjoyed and what they would like to see changed at the College. Learners gave a clear message that they didn't want to be over-protected, but instead would welcome activities with more challenge.

As a result of the conference Norma led a review of evening and weekend activities. The College also reorganised the residences so that groups of students with similar interests could more easily influence evening and weekend activities. Following the changes, participation in activities has nearly doubled and student satisfaction is high.

Tony Warren, College Principal, said, "it is vital that people with disabilities can influence the care and education they receive. Everyone played a part in achieving this award and we are proud that our success has been recognised"
