Richard Wheeler, aged 25, from Winchester, is enjoying his new found independence after retraining and learning to live with a recently acquired sight loss. His dedication and commitment to improving his life through learning is being recognised with a Regional Individual Learner Award as part of Adult Learners' Week 18 - 24 May 2013.

When Richard began losing his sight due to a hereditary condition, he also lost his job in hospitality, his independence and became increasingly isolated. Richard's parents suggested he attend the RNIB College in Loughborough, so in April 2012, Richard started by studying Braille, ICT, mobility and independent living skills and he also attended work experience and the job club.

Richard decided to work towards a new career in Human Resources, so he focused on computer skills and gained an iTQ level two certificate having learned to use a computer with screen reading software. Richard also gained more qualifications in Braille and learned to live and travel independently once more.

After finishing the programme at the RNIB College, Richard progressed to the Transitional Employment Scheme and gained a six-month paid placement at Royal Hampshire County Hospital. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, this placement could not go ahead as part of the Transitional Employment Scheme but Richard was still determined to complete a voluntary position with the hospital where he is currently putting his skills into practice and gaining vital experience. Richard is to begin a Business Management degree at Winchester University in September 2013 to help him pursue a new career.

Richard said, "I am both happy and confident about my career and life in general and feel that although it may have been a struggle at first, I have come out the other side a better and stronger individual than ever before".
